Hawai’i Kai, also known as Maunalua or Koko Marina, is one cherry spot on the East side of O‘ahu. It’s the biggest neighborhood out this way, developed back in the day by Henry J. Kaiser around the old Maunalua fishpond, Kuapa. Kaiser started dredging in 1959, turning the wetlands into the marina and neighborhoods we all love today. By 1961, he teamed up with the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Estate to develop over 500 acres into what you see now—residential areas, a marina, and some sweet commercial spots. You’ll find everything from high-end homes to a shopping center, parks, and more. Plus, it’s close to some of the best spots on the island, like Sandy’s, Makapu’u Lighthouse, Koko Crater Botanical Garden, and the famous Hanauma Bay.
